Laws That Provide Compensation for Sex Trafficking Victims


Sex Trafficking

18 U.S.C. § 1591 criminalizes sex trafficking, including recruiting, harboring, transporting, providing, obtaining, or maintaining a person for commercial sex acts through force, fraud, or coercion.



Financial and Civil Liability

18 U.S.C. § 1595 A victim may bring a civil action against the perpetrator or whoever knowingly benefits from participation in a venture which that person knew or should have known has engaged in sex trafficking.



Communications Decency Act

47 U.S.C. § 230(e)(5), Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act, and Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act allow civil liability for websites or platforms that knowingly facilitate sex trafficking.



Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) – 18 U.S.C. § 1961-1968 allows victims of trafficking-related activities to sue entities or individuals engaged in a “pattern of racketeering activity.”
